What is the thyroid
First, what is the thyroid? It is a gland in the shape of butterfly in front of the vocal cords, which secretes hormones known as thyroxine and triiodothyroxine . They serve to stimulate cells to produce proteins. In fact, fallen earth chips, thyroid determines the metabolic rate of most body organs. However, sometimes this gland goes awry, resulting in symptoms and discomfort.
HYPOTHYROIDISM
Hypothyroidism results in a lower production of hormones of the thyroid gland. In doing so it provides less hormones and oxygen to the organs. The body works so slow.
People most at risk
Women over 50 years, those who have given birth during the year, children and the elderly are more likely to develop this disease. 100 Canadians will be reached during his life.
Risk Factors
Other factors can cause hypothyroidism. Smoking during pregnancy, excess iodine or heavy consumption of certain foods (sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, rutabagas and radishes) are responsible.
Causes
The exact causes are unknown, however. Iodine deficiency can cause this slowdown, but the destruction of the gland by the immune system (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis), treatment with radioactive iodine and / or removal of the gland may also reduce the production of hormones essential cells.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism
Other symptoms appear in people with (but not all). Lack of energy, fatigue, weight gain despite a modest decrease in appetite, buy fallen earth chips, slowed heartbeat, muscle cramps and stiffness, irritability or depression may reveal a slowing of the thyroid gland.
Others will have to deal with constipation, swelling of the face, pale skin and hair, deeper voice and husky and, sometimes, confusion, difficulty concentrating and memory loss.
In children
In children, growth retardation, unusual sleep, constipation, poor feeding and crying hoarse (in infants) can help diagnose a problem with the thyroid.
Prevention
To prevent hypothyroidism, a diet based on regular consumption of trace elements including iodine, zinc and selenium is often effective. You will find these elements in fish and seafood, brazil nuts, oils, beef, as well as calf’s liver, beef and pork. On our table, iodized salt reduces the risk of iodine deficiency.
HYPERTHYROIDISM
At the opposite of hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, less frequently, resulting in excessive production of hormones and an important contribution to oxygen. The body gets carried away …
Causes
Among the elements that often cause hyperthyroidism, stress has a prominent place. The excessive production of hormones, known as Graves’ disease, the growth of nodule toxin in the gland itself or inflammation of the thyroid also cause hyperthyroidism.
Symptoms of hyperthyroidism
Among the symptoms that betray hyperthyroidism, increased heart rate (over 100 beats per minute at rest) or palpitations, excessive sweating, flushing, tremors for hands, difficulty sleeping, cheap fallen earth chips, swings d mood and nervousness are common among people. Others will have to contend with frequent stools, shortness of breath, weakness, weight loss despite increased appetite, change in menstrual cycle or eyes often dry and irritated.
