The term herniated disc hide the lumbago, sciatica, neck pain, neuralgia, etc.. All these painful conditions have in common a disc protrusion or cervical spine beyond its normal position.
The hernia refers to the protrusion of an organ or body part from the cavity in which it is normally content through a natural orifice or accidental. The main concern diaphragm hernias (including hiatal hernia), the viscera of the abdomen and spinal discs.
In the latter case, earth eternal gold,it is called disc herniation and a disc is between two vertebrae that protrudes.
The intervertebral disc is composed of two parts: a central gelatinous nucleus and a ring of peripheral fibers attaching the two vertebrae together.
A herniated disc occurs when the ring is cracked and the kernel is committed by the latter. It then projects outside of the spine and compresses a nerve root or spinal cord.
This phenomenon occurs most often at the lumbar level, between the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae or between the 5th lumbar vertebra and first sacral vertebrae. But the cervical vertebrae are not spared.
Thus, in cases of damage in the lower back, one speaks of lumbago, and when the core compresses the sciatic nerve, it is called sciatica.
Who and why?
The herniation may be due to a mild strain, but repeated. Thus it often affects manual workers. It may also result from carrying a heavy load or a sudden twisting of the trunk. In fact, the general cause of the herniated disc is the progressive deterioration of discs,earth eternal items, in adulthood, begin to show signs of aging.
Men are more often affected than women. The age of onset of this disease is between 20 and 30 years hernias occur frequently. But the risks are two times higher in people who have been affected by back pain.
Symptoms
The herniated disc causes acute pain, a sensation of tearing in the back. The pain is intense and radiant, as low down the leg or foot in the case of sciatica. Numbness may also occur.
The compression of a nerve root causes neuralgia associated with tingling, or even paralysis.
Treatment
First, the treatment aims to alleviate spinal pain and neuralgia. It is used analgesics (which includes aspirin) and anti-inflammatory drugs. If this treatment is not enough, you realize the epidural corticosteroid infiltration.
The most important thing is to continue to move and walk and avoid bed rest. The gentle mobilization permitted by painkillers and anti-inflammatory support for good recovery. The charging port is of course forbidden.
Bed rest for two to four weeks is also indicated conventionally.
In case of persistent pain and to reduce relapse, massage, physical therapy and wearing a corset abdominal or cervical collar is recommended.
